Designers of the Future at the Heart of Slipper Production: An Industry Placement for Students from Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa School of Technical Sciences
A significant meeting took place aimed at strengthening the ties between academia and the industrial sector. Students from the Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa, Technical Sciences Vocational School, Footwear Design and Production Program, organized a technical field trip to modern production facilities to observe the "kitchen" of the industry firsthand. These young talents had the opportunity to merge their theoretical knowledge with the dynamics of a massive, real-world production line.
The Journey from Concept to Shelf: Analyzing Every Stage of Production
As part of the visit, students examined every step of the complex process, from the initial conceptual phase of a slipper to the final packaging. Guided by industry professionals, they received technical briefings at every station along the assembly line:
R&D and Design Center: Students observed how digital designs are transformed into physical prototypes, focusing on the critical precision required in modeling and mold preparation.
Cutting and Upper (Saya) Preparation: This section highlighted the importance of material efficiency and precision cutting, demonstrating the synergy between high-speed automation systems and meticulous craftsmanship.
Assembly and Injection Line: At the injection machines where footwear takes its final shape, the discipline of mass production was conveyed through a technical lens.
A Vision for Sustainability and Technology-Driven Manufacturing
One of the most remarkable highlights of the visit was the "Green Production" technologies, now an indispensable part of modern industry. Students examined sustainability initiatives that promote a circular economy, including:
The recycling of 59.5 tons of waste annually.
The utilization of solar energy to meet 75% of the facility's power requirements.
A zero-waste approach where 100% of production scraps are reintegrated into the manufacturing line before even reaching "waste" status.
The young designers witnessed the operational strength of a giant ecosystem that boasts an annual production capacity of 100 million pairs and exports to over 50 countries. The processes, managed by the collective effort of approximately 1,500 employees, provided students with vital insights into the corporate structure of a global enterprise.
Sincere Appreciation from the Academic Faculty
The visit was led by the Head of the Program, Asst. Prof. Dr. Serap Çaşkurlu, accompanied by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şeyda Eyüpoğlu, Lecturer Betül Kır, and Lecturer Can Hacıosmanoğlu, who evaluated the production processes alongside the students.
In a message of gratitude on behalf of the academic staff, the faculty stated:
"We were delighted to visit your factory as part of our department's technical field trip. We extend our deepest gratitude to your management and all employees for their warm welcome and hospitality. The technical insights and valuable information shared regarding production processes have once again demonstrated the vital importance of the link between the industry and education. We believe such collaborations are extremely beneficial and guiding for our students in terms of supporting theoretical knowledge with practical application."
Fresh Blood for the Industry: The Era of Applied Education
Students, who could not hide their excitement during the trip, noted that seeing how classroom techniques translate to an industrial scale is a turning point for their career planning. Experts emphasized that field experience is vital in meeting the industry's need for a qualified and skilled workforce.
At the end of the visit, the students of Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa left the facility not just as observers, but as visionary candidates who will shape the future of the footwear world. This productive day concluded with a commemorative group photo and a Q&A session where students’ professional inquiries were addressed.
